Spirituality Is it the same thing as religion? In one sense yes, in another no. Spirituality concerns itself globally with matters of the spirit. It is not the same as religion because you don't have to be religious to have a spiritual nature. Many people that do not believe in any one religion are quite often seekers, and are spiritual at heart. Agnostics, people that believe in God and spirit, but don't fall into a religious category, would be considered spiritual. On the other hand, very religious people, those that take the teachings of their religion to heart and not just go through the motions are spiritual also. In fact more people fall into the religious category of spirituality then the non-religious. I am not going to debate who is right or wrong, that is for you to decide. An important difference does exist between spirituality in religion and spirituality as opposed to religion. In recent times, spirituality in religion often implies that a believer having faith of a more personal nature, less dogmatic and much more open to new ideas and influences than the beliefs of well established religions. It also can imply that the nature of believer's personal relationship with God or their specific belief systems are more personal and private, as opposed to a general relationship with a Deity as shared by all members of a given faith (dogma). Those who speak of spirituality in a nonreligious sense, generally believe in the existence of many "spiritual paths" and deny any instructed truth or gospel about the best path to follow. Many followers of mainstream religions regard spirituality as an aspect of their personal religious experience, and tend to contrast spirituality with the secular "worldliness" rather than with the ritual expression of their religion. People of a more New-Age slant tend to regard spirituality not as religion per se, but as the vital and active connection to a force, power, spirit, or sense of the deep self awareness. So Why Are Some Religious And Others Just Spiritual? Until very recently, with the exception of adult religious education, spirituality has been given little attention in mainstream education. Very little about spirituality is taught in schools. This may be because spirituality is difficult to define and can sometimes be confused with religion (as noted above). For many of us, our spirituality is clearly influenced by how we were raised from a child, both religiously and culturally. Yet, spirituality is not the same as religion; religion is an organized community of believers that has written codes of regulatory behavior, known as dogma, whereas spirituality is more about one's own inner personal belief and experience of a higher power or greater purpose. |
