Divination - The attempt to predict the future by interpreting omens, signs, stars or other set means. It varies from simple fortune telling in that it is more of a religious endeavor, rather then a personal one. There are many methods of divination, and most (if not all) are rejected by the scientific community. Trying to foretell the future has always fascinated mankind. We fear the unknown, and the future, like death, is one of the great unknowns. To cope with this fear, various people have tried to overcome the mysteries of the future, with all sorts of methods, ranging from somewhat logical, to pure superstitious nonsense. Astrology has been a leading method of divination for many years, and is practiced today by many people. Also numerology, tarot cards, reading of tea leaves, palmistry, nearly every method you can imagine has been tried. Since there are no serial lottery winners out there, we must assume it is either not possible to tell the future, or in doing so, it is vague at best. Religion and Divination It is interesting how most religions condemn divination, yet within their texts are scores of examples of it. In christianity for example, it is strictly forbidden, yet in many pages of the bible predictions are made. Only "special" people are allowed to make predictions, people blessed, saints apostles etc. All others attempting this are labeled "heretic" or in league with the "devil". Christianity is not alone in this, most major religions do not allow ordinary people to use divination. Science and Divination It might be thought that science itself is a form of divination, but it is not. Science figures out futuristic events but logical means. Predictions of weather patterns, global conditions, reactions to chemicals, are all based on facts and knowledge of cause and effect. Divination is more based on superstition and tradition. Summary

Trying to figure out the future with divination can be fun and entertaining, but should not be taken too seriously. There is no fact based science to support it in any of it's various forms.
